How Do I...Change my Major?

There are two types of majors at Virginia Tech, restricted and non-restricted. Restricted majors have specific criteria students must meet to be eligible to declare. Speak with your academic advisor to determine if your potential major is restricted or unrestricted.

There are three different times during the year when students can change their major. These times generally occur at the end of fall, spring, and summer. There are different deadlines for restricted and unrestricted majors.

Secondary majors and minors differ per college and department. A chart is located at the bottom of this page with further information

To change your major, follow these instructions. Students can change to University Studies using this process as well. University Studies is a non-restricted major, meaning we can accept any current student with less than 60 earned credit hours total.
