Welcome to Virginia Tech and University Studies!
Our goal is to help make your transition to Virginia Tech and University Studies as smooth as possible. An outline of your next steps is below. If you have questions feel free to email advising@vt.edu.
What is virtual academic advising and course registration?
It is the academic college portion of your VT summer orientation experience; a series of tasks and meetings designed to help you with your transition to college and fall class planning. It is required for all new students. This experience is in addition to the University First-Year Orientation, but some of our steps and reminders may overlap.
University Studies Summer Advising and Course Registration Timeline
Starting May 6:
- Check your VT email for the University Studies welcome email that includes the required questionnaire. You cannot schedule an appointment with an advisor until you have completed the questionnaire.
- Welcome emails will be sent on a rolling basis after May 6 depending on when you accept your offer to attend VT.
Starting May 20:
- If you have completed the questionnaire from your welcome email, start looking for an email from a University Studies Advisor with fall class recommendations and additional registration information.
- Fall class recommendation emails will be sent on a rolling basis between May 20 and June 6.
Starting June 7:
- If you have completed the questionnaire, you will be able to start selecting a time to schedule your future academic advising appointment. The link to schedule an appointment will be sent to your VT email address.
June 12 - July 19:
- Attend the mandatory, virtual one-on-one academic advising meeting that you scheduled. This can be done after you begin registering for fall courses.
- If you have not met with a University Studies advisor by July 5, a registration hold will be added to your VT account, which prevents adding or adjusting fall classes. The hold will be removed once you have attended your advising meeting.
- After July 19 if you have not met with an advisor or completed your required advising steps for fall enrollment, you will be contacted to create a plan.
June 12 – August 30:
- Register for fall 2024 courses. This will be an ongoing process throughout the summer and can begin prior to meeting with an academic advisor.
- Additional information about registering for classes can be found in the University Studies Canvas site linked above and will be discussed during your advising meeting.
